Mental spoons are a metaphor that helps to explain the amount of energy a person has to expend during the day. Just like physical spoons, we have a limited number of mental spoons each day. Some days we have more and some days we have less. Having a mental spoon shortage means that we don’t have enough energy to do everything we need to do during the day. It can lead to feelings of fatigue and overwhelm. The good news is that there are ways to manage and conserve our mental spoons. Making time for self-care, such as getting enough sleep and eating well, can help us to have more spoons to use during our day. Additionally, learning to say “no” to things that we don’t have the energy for can also help to conserve our mental spoons.
